The Story Behind Root & Reins

Every once in a while someone asks me where the name Root & Reins came from. As this little corner of the internet has grown and changed over the years, I realized I hadn't really shared the story. It begins with a little girl and a horse.

My daughter started riding when she was nine years old. At first it was simply something she loved—one lesson a week that quickly became the highlight of her days. I don't think either of us realized then how much horses would shape our family or how many years of our lives would be spent at the barn. As she grew older, working with horses became much more than a hobby and blossomed into a saving grace.

Like many families, the middle school years brought their own challenges. Looking back, I can honestly say the barn became a place where we both could breathe. There was something comforting about the familiar rhythm of caring for horses. Water buckets still needed filling. Stalls still needed cleaning. The work didn't change just because life felt uncertain.

And somehow, that steadiness became a gift. People often think horseback riding is what builds character. I think it's everything surrounding the ride. Showing up before anyone else. Sweeping the barn aisle and cleaning tack. Learning responsibility when no one is watching and that trust isn't demanded—it is earned, one quiet interaction at a time.

Over the years I watched my daughter grow into a capable, compassionate young woman. Horses taught her patience, perseverance, humility, and confidence in ways I never could have planned. When I think back on those years, I don't remember the ribbons nearly as much as I remember the ordinary moments. The early Saturday mornings with coffee in a travel mug. The smell of fresh hay and the peaceful drive home after she had given her brothers a riding lesson. I will always remember the long wait in the car for her and watching her quietly brush a horse long after everyone else had gone home. Those simple moments became part of our family's story.

These days, she works on a ranch, and I always look forward to visiting. Some of my favorite moments are simply sitting by the arena watching her ride or walking through the barn while she goes about the ordinary work of caring for the horses. It's funny how life comes full circle. What started with riding lessons all those years ago has become part of who she is, and I'm grateful I still get to share in a little piece of it.

Although Root & Reins was originally designed in part for equine-guided somatic wellness experiences and has since taken a different direction, I never wanted to leave that part of our story behind. The horse in the logo isn't there because this is an equestrian website. It’s because horses quietly shaped the way I think about life and motherhood, and teaching. Watching my daughter work alongside many horses with different temperaments and needs taught me that growth takes time and trust is built through consistency.

The reminder that gentle leadership along with consistency is often stronger than force are lessons that didn't stay at the barn. They found their way into our homeschool, our home, my faith, and now into the resources I hope to share here. Root & Reins heart for me is still the same as the first equine-guided experience and now has grown into more. It's about putting down deep roots, leading with gentleness, and trusting that the quiet, ordinary relational work we do each day is often the work that shapes us most. I hope you'll find a little of that spirit here—a place to slow down, gather encouragement, and remember that the most meaningful growth rarely happens all at once. It happens one ordinary day at a time.
